Béjaïa stands on the edge of the Mediterranean and has a rich history - it’s one of the oldest cities in Algeria. ​The capital of Kabylia has become famous for its beeswax candles - indeed this is where the French word for “candle” – “bougie” - comes from.

​You’ll be able to see the remains of the fortified walls of the Porte Fouka, the Fort Moussa, the Casbah, the Porte Dorée, the Roman Citerne and the Roman Cippe, a tombstone. Nature lovers won’t want to miss the chance to go for a stroll in Gouraya national park, listed as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, and will then be able to go to Cape Carbon. The path which leads there runs along some superb coves.
