Béjaïa stands on the edge of the Mediterranean and has a rich history - it’s one of the oldest cities in Algeria. ​The capital of Kabylia has become famous for its beeswax candles - indeed this is where the French word for “candle” – “bougie” - comes from.

Algeria’s history means that it has very close ties to France, and it is the birthplace of many writers such as Yasmina Khadra, Assia Djebar, Mohamed Dib and Albert Camus.
