Discover Peru - Piura Piura is currently an important center of economic development in the north of the country. Catacaos is located 12 km from the city, known for its straw and cotton handicrafts, gold and silver filigree objects and exquisite restaurants. The town of Chulucanas is another place famous for its ceramics and excellent chicha bars (local drink). The coast of Piura offers a varied and very attractive circuit. Máncora, very close to the limit with the department of Tumbes, is a small cove of beautiful beaches that are eagerly sought by surfers, groups of young revelers and entire families. To the south is Cabo Blanco, which is famous because personalities such as the writer Ernest Hemingway met there, attracted by deep sea fishing such as merlin, swordfish or grouper; it is currently the ideal place to practice surfing, since it has one of the best waves in Peru. Colán is the main resort where the inhabitants of the city of Piura gather, with its typical wooden houses raised over on on the edge of the ocean.
