Located only 3 hours and 45 minutes from the city, the Colca Valley and Canyon is one of the country’s most extraordinary destinations. The entire zone has colorful pre Inca terraces cultivated until today with quinoa, corn, barley and wheat. In pre-Hispanic times this region was inhabited by Collaguas; today, the inhabitants have learned to conserve their colonial churches such as those in Yanque, Lari and Madrigal and they continue to dress with beautiful costumes. In the valley, adventure sports, such as mountain cycling, trekking and white water rafting are also practiced, and in the Cruz del Cóndor you can observe the majestic flight of the condors. Other places of interest in the department are the Petroglyphs of Toro Muerto, the valley of the volcanoes of Andagua and the Cotahuasi Canyon.

Known as the White City because of its beautiful white walls made from the volcanic stone known as “sillar”, Arequipa lies on the slopes of the imposing Chachani and Misti volcanoes and the snowcapped peak Pichu Pichu. In the center of the city, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000, there are colonial churches and houses with a baroque-indigenous style, as well as the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a miniature Spanish city with stone streets, beautiful patios and squares. Sabandía, Tiabaya and Tingo, in the countryside, are must-see places to visit, and the irresistible local gastronomy is the perfect complement of the visit.

The department of Arequipa presents a varied topography. It begins in the coastal desert and rises into the Andes reaching a great height in the peaks of its snowcapped mountains and volcanoes.
